About The Lissome
The Lissome is an award-winning independent publication based in Berlin exploring the intersection of Earth-centred fashion design, mindfulness, ecology and system transformation through poetic and sensuous storytelling – providing a gentle space for conversations and contemplation, inspiring positive change and making hopeful futures tangible.
Created by an international community of creatives in fashion and beyond, and published annually by The Lissome Verein non-profit association, The Lissome exists to advance a culture of regeneration, compassion and cooperation in the realms of fashion, crafts and contemporay culture.
Naming the magazine after the 18th-century word “lissome” meaning “gentle, calm, gracious, kind”, we set out to tell our stories in a gentle and joyful way, by means of beauty, manifesting the spirit we would like to see in the world.
Purpose of The Lissome
The purpose of The Lissome is to advance and share knowledge about a holistic sustainable fashion system that places human and planetary well-being at the centre. Through its online platform and print publications, it connects creatives (writers, designers, photographers, art directors, stylists etc.) from the fashion industry and beyond with craftspeople, academics and activists as well as end consumers, and offers space for critical discourse and creative expression.
Our aim is to heighten awareness and appreciation for the origin of textiles, high-quality design and craftsmanship, and responsible production processes to further cultural changes in social discourse and behaviour. The conscious and decelerated enjoyment of quality and beauty is promoted as a desirable alternative to the current trends of overproduction and overconsumption.
The Lissome is featured as a positive example of responsible media communication in the 2023 UN Sustainable Fashion Communication Playbook, a joint publication by UN EP and UN Climate Change providing a framework for countering misinformation, reducing messages perpetuating overconsumption and redirecting aspiration to sustainable lifestyles.
