MATERIA BOTANICA / Spain
MATERIA BOTANICA grew from a desire to understand materials from their raw state and to trace the entire journey of a garment – from the sheep or plant to the finished piece. After leaving the fashion industry, its founder spent a year travelling through Latin America and Europe, learning traditional, Indigenous and contemporary textile techniques and seeing how closely they were tied to local landscapes, resources and communities.
Today, she works with Spanish Merino wool from small-scale extensive farms, develops her own yarns from raw fleece, and naturally dyes them by extracting colour directly from wild plants, cultivated species and plant waste collected from local farmers and food producers. Every stage takes place in Spain, from fibre processing to knitting and garment construction in small workshops in Galicia. Working at this scale allows MATERIA BOTANICA to maintain close traceability while creating from what already exists, rather than continuously extracting new resources.
